West Midlands Euro-MP welcomes Kennedy decision to march

12.00.00am GMT Mon 10th Feb 2003

Commenting on Charles Kennedy's announcement on Sunday to attend the Stop the War demonstration on Saturday 15th February, West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne said:

"I am delighted that Charles has decided to join us on the march. Charles has been the most vocal critic of Tony Blair's position on Iraq in the House of Commons and it is only right that he stand shoulder to shoulder with the hundreds of thousands of people expected next Saturday."

"Like the vast majority of people who will be demonstrating on Saturday, the Liberal Democrats are not blindly against war, regardless of the consequences. But the fact remains that serious questions remain unanswered by Tony Blair and George Bush. It is now a year since George Bush's infamous 'axis of evil' speech, yet the case against attacking Iraq remains weak. Fundamentally, we must work within the UN and oppose unilateral action."

"Liz Lynne has called on the people of West Midlands to take part in the day of protest. "I believe the government has underestimated the strength of feeling there is on this issue across the country. West Midlands people should make themselves heard this Saturday."
