UK Lib Dem MEPs Force Barroso to backdown

Commenting on Commission President-elect Barroso's decision to suspend the submission of proposed Commissioners for approval by MEPs, West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne said,

"Barroso was staring down the barrel of a gun. He looked MEPs in the eye and knew we would pull the trigger.

"The European Parliament has long been criticised for lacking teeth. Today democracy has bitten back. The Parliament has shown strength and a determination that the process of examining Commission nominees must be respected.

"MEPs rightly rejected a wholly unsuitable Justice Commissioner and Mr Barroso, although late in the day, has finally recognised the validity of this rejection.

"He must now bring forward a team of commissioners that has the support of the whole parliament."
