Euro-MP backs Warwick Council decision to oppose airport expansion

4.21.26pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 23rd Sep 2005

Liz Lynne Liberal Democrat MEP for the West-Midlands warmly welcomed yesterday's vote by Warwick Council to oppose the Coventry Airport expansion.

Liz Lynne said,

"There is no need to further expand Coventry Airport. Birmingham has enough capacity to accommodate the surrounding areas including Warwickshire and Coventry.

"The local residents don't want it, and the district councillors know this - that is why they have voted against the planning officers. The increase in night flights will not only disrupt local lives but also endanger the airspace that is already heavily used by Birmingham Airport.

"The surrounding environment is already under threat and an expansion of the airport will only create further pressure on our natural surroundings. I think the councillors vote was very sensible."
