Party must unite behind new leader - Liz Lynne

3.52.42pm GMT Thu 2nd Mar 2006

The Liberal Democrats must unite behind Sir Menzies Campbell, who was today announced as the party's new leader, West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne said today.

Sir Menzies Campbell was named as winner of the leadership contest today, after gaining 58% of the votes after the second round. Chris Huhne came second, with 42% of the votes after the second round, and Simon Hughes third.

Liz Lynne had backed Chris Huhne in the contest, and recently accompanied him on a series of campaign visits around the West Midlands. But speaking after today's result, she stressed the need for supporters of all three candidates to rally behind the new leader.

"The last few weeks have been difficult in many ways for the Lib Dems, but the recent by-election victory in Dunfermline and West Fife was a welcome boost, and I am confident we will emerge a stronger, more united party."

"While I am obviously disappointed that Chris Huhne will not be the party's next leader, he fought an excellent, well-run and media-savvy campaign that saw him emerge from rank outsider to a serious contender who came a close second. I have no doubt he could make a great leader in the future."

"For now, it is important that the party rally round Ming. He is an experienced politician with a wealth of experience, and I am sure he will lead us to success both nationally and in the forthcoming local elections."
