EURO-BOOST FOR WEST MIDLANDS TRANSPLANT PATIENTS

6.58.16pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 4th Jun 2007

West Midlands Euro-MP Liz Lynne has welcomed the launch of a new EU-wide donor scheme which should speed up waiting times for transplant operations for local residents.

Commenting today from Brussels, Liz said:

"It is tragic that across Europe 40,000 people are waiting for transplant operations and an estimated 10 people die each day because the necessary organ is not available."

"The launch of this scheme makes perfect sense for the people of the West Midlands and the rest of the EU, in that greater resources will be open to all citizens, giving doctors a better chance of finding the right donor at the right time."

While 56% of people polled across Europe would willingly donate an organ after dying, just 12% carry a donor card.
