The fight against genocide, discrimination and extremism must continue, says Liz Lynne MEP

Holocaust Memorial day highlights the continuing need for us to stand up against discrimination and extremism not just in Europe but beyond, says local LibDem Euro MP Liz Lynne.

The event is held today on January 27th, on the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau.

Speaking in Brussels today, Liz Lynne said: "We must treat this day of commemoration with all the solemnity and dignity it deserves.

"We also must stay vigilant against all acts of anti-semitism, racism, xenophobia and ethnic discrimination as well as discrimination against disabled people, many of whom also died in the holocaust. All of these evils continue to poison our society to this day.

"Unfortunately, anti-Semitic attacks are still common in today's Europe and in some countries are increasing.

"What matters is that each new generation should be taught about the depravities which mankind is capable of, and the need to fight all discrimination which can lead to these acts of barbarity."
